Why most side projects fail (and how to avoid it)

Most side projects fail because the builder skips validation. They have an idea, get excited, spend weeks building, and discover nobody wants it. AI changes this equation. With Claude Code, you can research your market, analyse competitors, and test assumptions in an afternoon — before writing a line of product code. The process: define your idea clearly, research the market size and existing solutions, identify gaps in the current offerings, validate demand through evidence (not gut feeling), and write a one-page brief that becomes your product roadmap. Ask Claude Code: "I want to build [your idea]. Help me validate this by creating a structured analysis. Cover: target audience and their pain points, existing solutions and their weaknesses, market size indicators, and potential differentiation."

Competitive analysis with Claude Code

Ask Claude Code: "Research the top 5 competitors for [your idea]. For each one, document: their pricing, their key features, what users complain about (based on common pain points for this type of product), and what they are missing. Create a comparison matrix." Claude Code will produce a structured analysis. Review it critically — does your idea offer something these competitors do not? If you cannot articulate a clear differentiator, either pivot the idea or find an underserved niche. The goal is not to be better at everything — it is to be better at one thing that a specific audience cares about.

Defining your minimum viable product

An MVP is the smallest thing you can build that delivers real value to real users. Most people scope their MVP too large. Ask Claude Code: "Based on the competitive analysis, define the minimum viable product for [your idea]. It should have no more than 3 core features. For each feature, describe: what it does, why it matters to the target user, and the simplest way to implement it. Cut everything that is nice-to-have." Claude Code will push you toward simplicity. If the MVP still has more than 3 features, you have not cut enough. You can always add features later — you cannot get back the weeks spent building features nobody uses.

Writing the one-page business brief

Ask Claude Code: "Create a one-page business brief for [your idea] based on everything we have discussed. Include: the problem (2 sentences), the solution (2 sentences), the target user (1 sentence), the MVP features (3 bullet points), the business model (how you will make money), the first milestone (what success looks like in 30 days), and a risk assessment (top 3 risks and mitigations)." This brief becomes your north star. Print it. Put it next to your monitor. Every decision you make while building should reference this brief. If a feature does not serve the problem statement, cut it.
