Trustworthy AI
AI systems designed and operated so that users, organisations, and society can rely on them to be accurate, fair, secure, and transparent.
Trustworthy AI refers to AI systems that have been designed, developed, and deployed with sufficient rigour that stakeholders β users, organisations, regulators, and the public β can confidently rely on them. It is the practical outcome of implementing responsible AI principles effectively.
The pillars of trustworthiness
- Accuracy and reliability: The AI consistently produces correct, high-quality results. It fails gracefully rather than silently producing wrong answers.
- Fairness: The AI treats all users equitably and does not discriminate based on protected characteristics.
- Transparency: Users understand when they are interacting with AI, and decisions can be explained or audited.
- Security: The system is protected against adversarial attacks, data breaches, and manipulation.
- Privacy: Personal data is handled according to regulations and user expectations.
- Robustness: The system performs reliably under varied conditions, unexpected inputs, and edge cases.
- Accountability: Clear ownership, audit trails, and processes for addressing errors or harms.
Building trust in practice
Trust is not a feature you add β it is a property that emerges from systematic practices:
- Testing: Comprehensive evaluation across diverse inputs, edge cases, and demographic groups.
- Monitoring: Continuous tracking of output quality, fairness metrics, and user feedback in production.
- Documentation: Clear model cards, data sheets, and deployment records.
- Incident response: Established processes for identifying, reporting, and resolving AI-related issues.
- Human oversight: Appropriate human review for high-stakes decisions.

The cost of broken trust
