AI governance is the set of policies, processes, and organisational structures that guide how an organisation develops, deploys, and manages artificial intelligence. It answers critical questions: Who decides which AI tools we use? Who is accountable when AI makes a mistake? What data can we share with AI? How do we comply with regulations?

Why AI governance matters now

As AI moves from experimentation to daily business operations, the risks of ungoverned AI use grow:

2.   • Data classification guide: Clear rules about what data can be shared with which AI tools
  • Review requirements: Defined review processes for AI-generated output based on risk level and audience
  • Incident response plan: Steps to follow when AI causes an error, bias incident, or data breach
  • Vendor evaluation framework: Criteria for assessing AI vendors (data handling, security, compliance, reliability)

Regulation landscape

AI governance must account for an evolving regulatory environment:

  • EU AI Act: The world's most comprehensive AI regulation, classifying AI systems by risk level and imposing requirements accordingly
  • GDPR: Already applies to AI that processes personal data
  • Industry regulations: Financial services, healthcare, and legal sectors have additional AI requirements
  • Emerging national laws: Many countries are developing AI-specific legislation

  1. An approved AI tools list
  2. A data classification guide (what can and cannot be shared with AI)
  3. A review policy for AI-generated content
  4. An AI lead or committee responsible for governance decisions
