AI Assistant

Gemini

Google's AI assistant with native access to Search, YouTube, Maps, and the entire Google ecosystem.

Gemini is Google's flagship AI assistant, and it has one advantage that no competitor can replicate: it is built by the company that indexes the world's information. Where ChatGPT and Claude rely on training data with knowledge cutoffs, Gemini can pull from Google Search in real time, making it uniquely useful for queries that require current information.

What it does

Gemini handles the standard range of AI assistant tasks — writing, analysis, coding, summarisation, brainstorming — but with deep integration into Google's product ecosystem. It lives inside Gmail, Google Docs, Sheets, Slides, and Drive. Ask it to summarise a long email thread, draft a response, or create a presentation from a document, and it works within the tools you already use rather than requiring you to copy-paste between windows.

How it works in practice

Gemini is available as a standalone web app (gemini.google.com), as a mobile app, and embedded across Google Workspace. The free tier uses Gemini Pro, which is capable enough for everyday tasks. Gemini Advanced ($19.99/month, bundled with Google One AI Premium) unlocks the most powerful models, 1 million token context windows, and deeper Workspace integration.

The multimodal capabilities are strong. Gemini can process text, images, audio, video, and code. You can upload a photo of a receipt and ask it to categorise the expense, or share a YouTube video URL and get a summary without watching the full thing.

Where it excels

The Google integration is the killer feature. If your organisation runs on Google Workspace, Gemini is the most frictionless AI to adopt because it meets you where you already work. The ability to reference your Drive files, emails, and calendar events directly within conversations eliminates the context-switching that slows down work with standalone AI tools.

Gemini's real-time web access also makes it strong for research tasks. Unlike assistants that work only from training data, Gemini can check current prices, find recent news, and verify facts against live search results.

Where it falls short

Gemini's writing quality, while good, does not match Claude's nuance or naturalness. For long-form content creation — articles, reports, proposals — the output tends to be competent but slightly generic. It also has a tendency to be overly helpful in a way that can feel shallow, offering broad overviews rather than the deep analysis you might get from Claude or ChatGPT with careful prompting.

The standalone experience outside of Google Workspace is less compelling. If you are not a Google Workspace user, much of Gemini's advantage disappears, and you are left with a capable but not class-leading assistant.

The business case

For Google Workspace organisations, Gemini Advanced is close to a no-brainer. The per-user cost is similar to competitors, but the integration savings — no copy-pasting, no context switching, no third-party connectors — add up quickly. For individuals not in the Google ecosystem, the value proposition is less clear.

Key Features

  • Native integration with Gmail, Docs, Sheets, Slides, and Drive
  • Real-time Google Search grounding for current information
  • 1 million token context window on Advanced tier
  • Multimodal processing — text, images, audio, video, and code
  • Deep Android and Chrome integration for mobile and browser use

Pricing

Free

Gemini Pro access with standard usage limits. Google account required.

Paid

Gemini Advanced at $19.99/month (bundled with Google One AI Premium, 2TB storage). Business and Enterprise tiers for Google Workspace.

Best For

  • Google Workspace organisations wanting AI embedded in their existing tools
  • Research tasks requiring real-time web search and current information
  • Multimodal workflows involving documents, images, and video

Not Ideal For

  • Long-form writing where nuance and voice consistency are critical
  • Users outside the Google ecosystem who would not benefit from Workspace integration

Verdict

Gemini is the best AI assistant for people who live in Google Workspace. The integration alone justifies the subscription for heavy Gmail, Docs, and Drive users. Outside that ecosystem, it is a solid but not exceptional generalist.
